Election of the President of the Republic
The Riigikogu will convene to elect the President of the Republic on September 2, 2026.
The right to nominate a candidate for President of the Republic rests with not less than one-fifth of all members of the Riigikogu. An Estonian citizen by birth who has attained 40 years of age may be nominated as a candidate for President of the Republic. A person who is serving as the President of the Republic for a second consecutive term or a person in active service in the Defence Forces may not be nominated as a candidate for President of the Republic.
Key dates:
• 21–24 August: nomination of candidates
• 2 September: first round of voting in the Riigikogu
• 3 September: second and third rounds of voting in the Riigikogu, if necessary
If the Riigikogu fails to elect the President, the President will be elected by the electoral body.
The election of the President of the Republic is organised by the National Electoral Committee.
