Riigikogu Elections 2011

Summary

On 6 March 2011 the citizens of Estonia elected the 12th Riigikogu. 

789 persons ran as candidates in the Riigikogu elections. 757 persons stood as candidates in 9 political party lists, and 32 persons ran as independent candidates.

580,264 out of 913,346 citizens with the right to vote took part in the Riigikogu Elections of 2011. Thus the voter turnout at the Riigikogu Elections was 63.5%.

The highest number of votes was cast for the Estonian Reform Party, who received 164,255 votes (28.6%), and the Estonian Centre Party, who received 134,124 votes (23.3%).

Four political parties exceeded the 5% election threshold stipulated by the Riigikogu Election Act to get seats in the Riigikogu: Estonian Reform Party, Estonian Centre Party, Pro Patria and Res Publica Union and Social Democratic Party. The Centre Party lost three seats, and the Estonian Green Party and the People’s Union failed to pass the threshold and gain any seats in the Riigikogu.

Election results in Estonia have been officially confirmed, new government has convened and alternate members of the Riigikogu have taken their seats in the Parliament. Estonian Reform Party and Pro Patria and Res Publica Union formed the new government and signed a coalition treaty (declaration of government). Together they have 56 seats in the parlament (out of 101).
