Election in the Riigikogu
The first round of voting took place on 28 August 2006.
After counting the votes of the first round, the National Electoral Committee ascertained the following numbers:

| 3. Members of the Riigikogu who participated in the voting | 65 |

As none of the candidates received the support of two thirds of the members of the Riigikogu, the second round of voting was held on 29 August.

Voting in the electoral body
The election of the President of the Republic in the electoral body took place on 23 September 2006.
The name of the presidential candidate Toomas Hendrik Ilves was entered on the electoral body ballot paper based on the results of the third round of voting in the Riigikogu.
Arnold Rüütel was presented as a candidate for the President of the Republic on 21 September.
After counting the votes of the first round, the National Electoral Committee ascertained the following numbers:

Under subsection 13(2) and proceeding from subsection 25(2) of the President of the Republic Election Act, the National Electoral Committee decided to declare Toomas Hendrik Ilves the President-elect of the Republic.
