The nomination of candidates for the European Parliament elections in early June started today. There are ten days to do this. 

The Head of State Electoral Office Arne Koitmäe explained that the candidates could submit their documents both on paper and electronically. “The documents for standing as a candidate can be completed, signed, and submitted electronically via the election information system without leaving home or political party headquarters,” Koitmäe said. 

Presenting candidates for registration began this morning and will end on 20 April at 6 p.m. 

Estonian citizens and citizens of other European Union Member States residing in Estonia and of at least 21 years of age may stand as candidates. Persons in active service in the Defence Forces and persons who are serving a prison sentence may not stand as candidates. 

Both independent candidates and political parties may take part. Up to nine candidates can be set up in the list of a political party. 

Documents for standing as a candidate can be submitted via the election information system at vis.valimised.ee. The State Electoral Office also accepts registration documents on paper at Toompea 1, Tallinn, on working days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on 20 April from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The documents can also be signed digitally and sent to [email protected].

Before registering, the political party or the independent candidate must transfer a security of EUR 4,100 per candidate to the account of the Ministry of Finance.

The European Parliament elections in Estonia will take place on the week of 3 to 9 June 2024. Citizens of Estonia and citizens of other EU Member States who are permanent residents of Estonia may vote. A citizen may stand as a candidate and vote in only one Member State.
